"Mary Samantha Slade, daughter of Luman Reed Slade and Roxy Pomeroy Booth, was born at Alto, Wisconsin, May 30, 1846 and died at her home in Independence, March 18, 1936, at the age of 89 years, 9 months, and 18 days. At the age of eleven she went to New york state, remaining with her paternal grandparents while attending school for a period of three years. On her return to Wisconsin she attended school in Packwaukee, where her parents then resided. They later moved to Westfield, Wisconsin, where she lived with her parents until the time of her marriage to George John Reid, October 13, 1867.

    Two weeks later they journeyed northward to their homestead near Elk Creek, which was then a wilderness in Trempealeau County (to join his brother James Reid and family and his brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Michael White, and children, who had settle there the previous season).

    In 1902 she and her husband moved to Independence where she has since resided. Her husband passed away in 1920, since which time she has been cared for by his niece, Eva May Reid, and guardian, Dr. G.F. Stack.

    She was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister, Edward of California, Edgar of Colorado, and Mrs. Stuart Daily of Herington, Kansas. She leaves to mourn her passing: one brother, Sherman F. Slade of Hartford, Conn.; four nieces, Mrs. R.L. Johnson, Junction City, Kansas, Mrs. Joe Dunn, Herington, Kansas, Mrs. Lou Daily Kelley, Houston, Texas, Mrs. Bernice Mueller, Iowa City, Iowa; four grandnephews, William P. Daily F, John J. and Stuart A. Mueller of Iowa City, Iowa; and two grand nieces, Mrs. Ashton D. Howard and Mary M. Kelley of Houston, Texas; and a cousin, Miss Jessie M. Cochrane of Beaver Dam, Wis.
