    Mrs. Ried [sic] was a member of First Presbyterian church here, the Eau Claire Woman's Club and the W. C. T. U. She participated in many civic projects.

    She is survived by her husband; two sisters, Mrs. T. E. Carroll and Mrs. R. J. Harrison of Eau Claire, and two brothers, Deak Williams of Strum and Bud Williams of Mondovi."5,3

  • Death: She died of broncho pneumonia; acute bronchitis on 18 March 1936 at age 89 in Independence, Trempealeau County, Wisconsin, United States. "Mary Samantha Slade, daughter of Luman Reed Slade and Roxy Pomeroy Booth, was born at Alto, Wisconsin, May 30, 1846 and died at her home in Independence, March 18, 1936, at the age of 89 years, 9 months, and 18 days. At the age of eleven she went to New york state, remaining with her paternal grandparents while attending school for a period of three years. On her return to Wisconsin she attended school in Packwaukee, where her parents then resided. They later moved to Westfield, Wisconsin, where she lived with her parents until the time of her marriage to George John Reid, October 13, 1867.

    Two weeks later they journeyed northward to their homestead near Elk Creek, which was then a wilderness in Trempealeau County (to join his brother James Reid and family and his brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Michael White, and children, who had settle there the previous season).

    In 1902 she and her husband moved to Independence where she has since resided. Her husband passed away in 1920, since which time she has been cared for by his niece, Eva May Reid, and guardian, Dr. G.F. Stack.

    She was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister, Edward of California, Edgar of Colorado, and Mrs. Stuart Daily of Herington, Kansas. She leaves to mourn her passing: one brother, Sherman F. Slade of Hartford, Conn.; four nieces, Mrs. R.L. Johnson, Junction City, Kansas, Mrs. Joe Dunn, Herington, Kansas, Mrs. Lou Daily Kelley, Houston, Texas, Mrs. Bernice Mueller, Iowa City, Iowa; four grandnephews, William P. Daily F, John J. and Stuart A. Mueller of Iowa City, Iowa; and two grand nieces, Mrs. Ashton D. Howard and Mary M. Kelley of Houston, Texas; and a cousin, Miss Jessie M. Cochrane of Beaver Dam, Wis.

    Fay Marie Pattridge was born on June 8, 1915, in Augusta, Wis., the daughter of Charles E. and Mary (White) Pattridge. Until the age of four, she lived with her parents in Jeffers, Minn., and then move to Fairchild, Wis., where she lived until 1920, then moved with her parents to their farm in Garden Valley township near Alma Center. On March 5, 1934, she was united in marriage to John Willard Newton, also of Garden Valley township. To this union were born three children. They farmed in the Garden Valley area until December 1, 1970, when they moved to their home in Alma Center.

    Fay worked as the librarian for the village of Alma Center form 1978 until she resigned in 2000. She was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Alma Center, the United Methodist Women and the Garden Valley Homemakers Club from 1938 until 2003. She was a past member of the East Lawn Cemetery Board and the Curtis Cemetery Board. Fay has lived in the Tri-County Nursing Home sine May of 2000.

    She is survived by her children, E. Joan (Junior) Jacobson of Alma Center, G. Rockne (Patricia) Newton of Des Plaines, Ill., and Gloria (John) Curran of Taylor. She is also survived by her ten grandchildren, Jerry (Rona) Jacobson of Alma Center, Janet (Dennis) Ammann of Black River Falls, Julie (Paul) Peters of Alma Center, Lori (Don) Olson of Black River Falls, Vonnie (Dale) Peterson Black River Falls, Bruce (Susan) Curran of Menomonie, Chris (Mary) Curran of Taylor, Tim Curran (friend, Christy) of Illinois, Noreen Newton of Des Plaines, Ill., and Nicole (Lance) Threewitt of Grayslake, Ill.; 20 great-grandchildren; special nieces and nephews, Charles (Elaine) Pattridge, Robert (Rita) Tichy, Carlotta (Gene) Ronson, Elvinia (Richard) Thompson, Richard Newton and Kathy (Newton) Boehm; other relatives and friends.

    Fay was preceded in death by her parents; her only brother, Francis; and her husband, Willard, on January 25, 1981.

    Funeral services for Fay M. Newton will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, July 18, 2003, at the United Methodist Church, Alma Center, with Reverend Meg Erickson officiating. Burial will take place in East Lawn Cemetery, Alma Center.

    She was born Aug. 8, 1898 to Thomas H. and Estella Little, near Eleva. She attended grade and high school in the area and La Crosse Normal School Physical Education Course, also Eau Claire Normal School Principle Course. She married Francis A. Pattridge Oct. 15, 1941, at Prairie du Chen, and was County Superintendent of Schools in Trempealeau County at the time of her marriage. They lived in Chetek, Kingston, Marquette, Albany, near Alma Center, Marshfield, and La Valle.

    Her husband in that area in 1953 at La Valle and she taught in that area until her retirement.

    Survivors are her son, Charles and wife Elaine, La Valle and three grandchildren at home; one sister, Mrs. Frances Englesby, Eau Claire and one brother, Archie Little, Eleva.

    She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, two brothers, and four sisters.

    Funeral services were held at Thompson Funeral Home, Wonewoc, Nov. 24 at 11 a.m. Pastor Ted Green officiated. Burial was in the Curtis Cemetery near Alma Center."1
