Ben was born in Freeport on Feb. 26, 1921, to Lloyd and Esther (Noeske) Confer. Following high school, he worked at Noeske Bros. Automobile dealership until World War II, when he joined the 96th Infantry Division, serving from October 1942 until discharge in January 1946.
He married Joyce Gray of Cedarville in April 1943. In 1944, under command of General Douglas MacArthur, he was in the invasion of Leyte when MacArthur returned to the Philippines, and also in the battle of Okinawa, Japan, for which the Division received the “Presidential Unit Citation.”
After 18 years in the Freeport/Cedarville area, in 1964, the family moved to San Luis Obispo, Calif., then retiring in 2000 to Carmel, Calif., near family. In 2007, Ben and Joyce moved to the RVM in Medford.
Ben is survived by his wife of 68 years, Joyce; son, Aril (Krystil) Confer of Reno, Nev.; daughter, Debbie (Jack) Angel of Monterey, Calif.; sister, Mary Confer of Freeport; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Interment is at Eagle Point National Cemetery. A Military Memorial Service is scheduled in the spring."1

Surviving are his wife, a daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Robert Lutz, Kokomo; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Bob Gray, Detroit, Mac and Julie McMasters, Kokomo; seven grandchildren, Cheri Lovelace; Kristin Lutz; Angela, Harley and Glen McMasters; Amanda Archer; Elizabeth Hulsey; two great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law Donald Lorenzen, Tucon [sic], Ariz. He was preceded in death by a sister.
Services are 11 a.m. Saturday at Ellers Mortuary, Webster St. Pastor Phil Spencer and the Rev. Dr. Gary Forbes will officiate. Burial will be in Albright cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Spirit Wind Church."3,11,4
