  • Marriage: Wilbur F Persons and Ida M Fitzgerald were married.5
  • Death: Wilbur F Persons died on 30 March 1944 at age 85 in Delevan, Cattaraugus County, New York, United States. "DELEVAN—Wilbur F Persons, world noted type manufacturer and president of the Empire Type and Foundry Company here, died Thursday morning (March 30, 1944) at his home on Main Street following an illness of ten days.

Besides casting monotype faces, Mr. Persons also designed several pieces of printing machinery.

Born November 24, 1858, at McKinstry near here, Mr. Persons was at first a telegraph operator for the Pennsylvania Railroad and then went into the insurance business. He became a printer of five newspapers now owned by W. F. Arthurs of Arcade, N. Y.

Through starting a ready print business, Mr. Persons became well known in Western New York and Northern Pennsylvania. He installed the first linotype machine in Western New York and also installed a monotype machine for his work.

    FOUNDS PLANT

His success was such that other printers asked him to cast type for them. It was thus that the idea of the Empire Type and Foundry Company was originated and founded by him fifty years ago. Mr. Persons retired about eight years ago.

Other firsts for the printer were his purchasing the first telephone in Delevan and his proposing the first electric light plant here.

In 1937 he built a house-automobile and toured through thirty-eight states. He called on President Calvin Coolidge at the White House. Most of his life, however, was spent in Delevan.

    LODGE MEMBER

For sixty-two years, Mr. Persons was a member of Arcade Lodge No. 419, Free and Accepted Masons. He was a fifty-year member of Delevan Lodge No. 616, I.O.O.F., and was a past president of the Buffalo Rotary Club.

His first wife was Alice Strong of Delevan, who died about seven years ago. His second wife was the former Ida M Fitzgerald of Syracuse, who survives him.

Also surviving are a granddaughter, Mrs. Evelyn C Bates of Elmira, N. Y., and a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Alice Day Whitney of Delevan. Mr. Persons' son, Claude W Persons, died in 1935.

Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon (April 1, 1944) at two-thirty o'clock at the late home, with the Rev. Henry Cattin, pastor of the Delevan Methodist Church, officiating. Arcade Lodge No. 419, Free and Accepted Masons, will have charge of the services at the grave. Burial will be in Maple Dale Cemetery here."6,5
