Emma L Scott
F, #7261, b. 5 May 1846, d. 2 June 1897
Parents
Biography
- Birth: Emma L Scott was born on 5 May 1846 in Allegany County, New York, United States.1,2,3,4
- Marriage: Francis Eugene ("Eugene") Hammond and Emma L Scott were married in September 1867.5,6,7
- Death: She died of Bright's disease on 2 June 1897 at age 51 at home in Cuba, Allegany County, New York, United States. "Emma L Hammond, wife of Ex-Supervisor F. E. Hammond, died at her home near North Cuba last Wednesday afternoon, of Bright's disease. She was 51 years of age. She leaves a husband, three daughters and two sons.
Mr. and Mrs. Hammond were both pupils of Prof. Buck at the Academy here, her maiden name being Emma Scott.
As the deceased, her family and relatives had long been ardent Spiritualists, the funeral services were in full accordance with the usage of that body. They were simple, but of the most impressive nature. To the Spiritualist they must have been most satisfactory; hardly otherwise, indeed, even tho those, including the writer of this notice, not of that belief. All who have the pleasure of an acquaintance with Mr. Hammond's family know that their devotion to each other is most remarkable; that the home life is thoroughly sympathetic and therefore uniformly and intensely happy. Yet the most noticeable feature of this occasion, which we would usually speak of as 'sad' was the serenity, that is perhaps hardly the word, but we can think of none better, shown by every member of this household—by the children, some still too young to be discipline by philosophy, by the husband and father about to bury the mortal remains of the one whom he chose in early youth, from all the world, as the chief treasure of his life.
Surely, here was something unique—something that, to an outsider, was surprising; and yet that, we are glad to say, was gratifying.
The explanation of this mystery came in the discourse that took the place of the ordinary 'funeral sermon.' This discourse was by that distinguished leader of the Spiritualists, Mrs. Cora Scott Richmond, the only sister of the deceased. That the address would be graceful in diction, brilliant in fancy, shrewd in thought, in a word, eloquent, we knew; for Mrs. Richmond's fame is established. It was also, and of this, in advance, we were not quite so sure, thoroughly admirable, from any reasonable standpoint of criticism, in its tone. In fact there was hardly a word spoken by Mrs. Richmond that could not have been accepted by the most orthodox. The central thoughts of the address were these: That death is only the entrance to a more perfect life; that the deceased are, in a certain sense, nearer to us than they were in life—doctrines akin to we all believe, but too often, in any great crisis, forget.
Members of the family took part in the service, reading selected and original poetry, furnishing the music and carrying the remains to the grave. Mrs. Hammond had joined with the family in choosing this resting place, a retired and beautiful spot, in their own grounds, with a wide and picturesque outlook.
We left the living members of this amiable family, feeling that no conventional words of sympathy were in place; that they had their own sources of consolation where were, as far as we could see, proving sufficient." G. W. F. B.4,8,9,10
